This is the worst car segment in the Vietnamese market: selling for “beautiful team”, less than 200 cars in a month.

There have been numerous companies exiting this segment due to low sales, while the remaining ones have not achieved impressive sales figures.

The Honda Accord is consistently a top-selling slow-moving car in the market every month.

January 2024 is considered a low point in the market as sales declined sharply in many segments. Among them, the worst hit is the D-segment sedan as the sales volume for the entire segment fell below the 200 car mark.

Specifically, the Toyota Camry, the best-selling model in the segment, only achieved sales of 103 cars, a decrease of more than half compared to the previous month. For the remaining models, the Mazda6 sold 50 units, the Kia K5 sold 34 units, while the Honda Accord sold only 8 units. In this segment, there is another notable name, the Volkswagen Passat, but the manufacturer did not disclose sales information.

In fact, not only in January, but D-segment sedans always have the lowest sales volume in the market. Accumulated for the whole year of 2023, the Toyota Camry, a model that has been leading the segment for many years, only achieved sales of 2,429 cars, a decrease of about 2,000 cars compared to 2022. Models like the Mazda6 or Kia K5 sold around 1,000 units, while the Honda Accord sold 58 units.

In recent years, D-segment sedans are no longer popular in the market. The main reason comes from the changing consumer tastes. Instead of choosing traditional sedan models with limited seating, Vietnamese users are increasingly preferring crossover or SUV models with 5+2 or 7 seats, with youthful design, advanced technology, and flexibility in movement. In addition, the emergence of a series of MPV models with attractive prices also makes users prefer them over D-segment sedans.

While these segments are expanding, the D-segment sedan shows clear signs of narrowing. Many manufacturers like Hyundai, Nissan, or VinFast have discontinued their models, leaving users with fewer options.

For the remaining brands, except for Toyota, which has shown relatively large investments in the Camry, the D-segment sedan is almost just an additional choice to help maintain the segment or fill the product range, rather than compete for sales. A prime example of this is the Honda Accord. If you visit many dealerships, you might not even find a display car, only when customers have a real demand, will the car be brought in for them to experience.
